Big in Europe and growing in popularity at home, the 2018 Ford Fiesta is going global. While Americans might associate the Ford brand with their F-series trucks, Europeans better know it for the Ford Fiesta. Now in its seventh generation, this supermini (subcompact car) has firmly found a footing at home too.

Why Buy the Ford Fiesta?

The exterior styling on the Fiesta is crisp and clean, thanks to broad swaths of rounded sheet metal. The hatchback especially has a beautiful roofline and well-proportioned features. In short, it looks urban-ready. Unfortunately, the inside still looks a little cluttered. A mass of buttons in the center console doesn't help, giving the appearance of a dated vehicle. The Fiesta accelerates and handles well and is quite fun to drive. Even the base engine knows its stuff, feeling nimble and responsive both in the city and on the highway.

The 2018 Ford Fiesta works best as a two-seater. There are back seats, but the leg room leaves much to be desired. It's not a posh car, but for short jaunts it should work just fine. The same attitude toward practicality is clear in the options. Keeping costs low, the standard features are few: 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-cylinder engine, Bluetooth, air conditioning, a rearview camera, and an AM/FM/CD audio system with Bluetooth streaming.

What's New for 2018?

The Fiesta offers two changes for 2018: one good, one bad. First, all Fiestas now have rear view cameras. This proven life-saving piece of technology is becoming standard for all kinds of models across the industry. The other change, unfortunately, is the loss of the 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. Lack of interest meant the axe for this fuel-saving option.

That leaves us with the 1.6-liter I-4 engine on all non-ST models. It gets 27 city and 35 highway miles per gallon with the standard five-speed manual transmission or 27 city, 37 highway miles with the optional six-speed dual clutch automatic. The ST trim gets the better 1.6-liter turbo-four, which delivers far more horsepower and almost the same gas mileage.
