2018 Ford EcoSport vs Hyundai Kona

2018 Ford EcoSport vs Hyundai Kona

Ford knows a thing or two about producing big-selling crossover SUVs. With the EcoSport, Ford enters the subcompact segment for the first time here in America, even though the EcoSport has been selling elsewhere in the world since 2012. Let's see how this Ford model fares against another newcomer in the shape of the Hyundai Kona.

Exterior Styling: Hyundai Kona

Small crossovers are probably sold more on how they look than just about any other attribute. But the subcompact class appears to be where manufacturers are also most confident with pushing the styling boundaries. The Ford pretty much looks like what it is: a pumped-up Fiesta. And it has to be said the EcoSport a little more awkward than the Escape and Edge models that sit above the EcoSport in the current Ford SUV family. The Hyundai Kona certainly isn't instantly attractive to a lot of people, but the South Korean automaker deserves credit for giving us something different. It's probably going to be love or hate for buyers with both of these two, but the more interesting design of the Kona gets our vote here.

Interiors: Ford EcoSport

Despite being small, the amount of passenger and cargo capacity these subcompact crossovers have is remarkable. It's another big reason for them being as popular as they are right now. There isn't much difference when it comes to space inside these two, although by the numbers the Kona is slightly more generous. The quality of both models is about on par, but there's a more comfortably familiar look and feel about the cabin of the EcoSport. It's a close call once again, but the Ford has a slightly more inviting interior.

Engines and Performance: Ford EcoSport

Any Ford equipped with one of the Blue Oval's three-cylinder EcoBoost turbo engines is going to be worth checking out. And the EcoSport's 1.0-liter engine producing 123 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque lives up to that billing. If basic all-wheel drive system is on your shopping list, then it means stepping up to a 2.0-liter inline-four with 166 horsepower and 149 lb.-ft of torque. The Hyundai's 2.0-liter inline-four and 1.6-liter turbo-four both produce more power than their Ford equivalents, but you'll have to take our word for it that the 1.0-liter EcoBoost is a globally award-winning engine for good reason. The EcoSport is another win for the Ford thanks to that EcoBoost powerplant, but only just.

If you like the way the Kona looks you won't be disappointed by any aspect of this Hyundai really, from the quality of the interior to the performance of the engines. But Ford has been at the top of its SUV game for a while longer than Hyundai, and on balance, that maturity shows and makes the 2018 Ford EcoSport the better vehicle.
