The 2018 Ford F-550 is for when anything less than 'all the truck' simply won't do.

What is the Ford F-550?

Unless you're into commercial trucks, you might not have been aware that the F-550 even existed. You might be wondering just how high the F-series numbers climb. (Hint: It's F-750.) The F-550 occupies middle ground between pickups and the 650/750 medium-duty trucks. It comes with a chassis cab, which allows your company to customize it after purchase. Outfit it into a flatbed, dump truck, ambulance, moving truck, utility hauler, or just about anything else.

How Strong is the Ford F-550 Exactly?

The F-550 comes with three engine options: a 6.2-liter V-8, a gas 6.8-liter V-10, or a 6.7-liter V-8 Power Stroke diesel. With power of 330 horses, the Power Stroke engine delivers 750 lb.-ft. of torque. That's the highest power and torque ratings in its class--ever. With all that power, you can do the work that most truck drivers only dream of. Towing up to 31,800 pounds and with a maximum payload capacity of 12,730 pounds, the Ford F-550 is the ox of the truck family.

The truck's cab is made of a lighter-than-steel aluminum alloy, but the chassis is 95% steel. All together, the truck can weigh up to 19,500 pounds when empty. It all rests on 19-and-a-half-foot wheels capped with polished aluminum.

What Features Are Available on the Ford F-550?

The Ford F-550 offers a surprising number of features for hard workers doing tough jobs. You have your choice of ten colors, everything from Oxford White (for the distinguished construction site) to moody Magma Red. You can grab the SYNC 3 infotainment system on a touchscreen with smartphone capability. You choose between three cab options: Regular Cab, Crew Cab, and Super Cab. Any way you go, sit on comfortable cloth seats with six upfitter switches within easy reach. At your feet, you have under seat storage in the SuperCab or a fold-flat/locking load floor in the Crew.

In addition to cab options, you have your choice of three trims: XL, XLT, and Lariat. The $39,000 XL is a stripped down work-focused machine while the Lariat can feel downright luxurious. The $58,000 Lariat gets the SYNC3 system standard with available navigation, plus dual zone A/C, leather-trimmed seats, Sirius XM Radio, and the Powerstroke diesel engine.
