The 2018 Ford Focus is a compact car that has an enduring legacy of popularity--and we can see why.

Why Buy the 2018 Ford Focus?

Apart from being an attractive compact car, the 2018 Ford Focus can just about be anything a buyer wants it to be. At one end of the spectrum, the Focus can be an affordable, modest, and nicely equipped car that's suitable as a second or third car in a family or as first car for a new driver. At the opposite extreme, the compact Ford can also be a very lively, fun, and sporty car, or an all-out performance beast in its RS form.

The current generation of the Focus may have been around for a while, but a number of small but well-executed cosmetic enhancements have kept it looking as fresh and attractive as anything it its class. The ride quality is very good, you'll have plenty of options for upgrading, and the fuel economy can be outstanding.

Which Ford Focus Model is Best?

You could easily make a case for any model in the Focus lineup being the best. Everything depends on what you want from your car. But if we divide the lineup into the performance and standard models, the SEL is probably the best of the standard lineup and the ST is the performance model to choose.

The SEL comes standard with the 2.0-liter Ti-VCT engine and PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift capability, along with a very good package of standard features and equipment. When it comes to performance, the obvious choice would be the outrageous Focus RS, but its very high price and track-ready performance are just going to be too extreme for most buyers. The sporty ST certainly looks the part with its fancy wheel and body kit, but its retail price and its 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine are much easier to live with than the RS.

Is the Ford Focus Reliable?

One of the real benefits of the Ford Focus is that it has been tried and tested by millions of drivers, making it easy to service and easy to maintain. You won't find any fancy all-wheel drive systems to worry about, unless you choose the Focus RS,and the engines are all well-proven over millions, if not billions of miles driven. The Focus is well-known, which can give buyers confidence in choosing it.

Is the Ford Focus Good on Gas?

The truth is that the Ford Focus can be pretty much as good on gas as you want it to be. If fuel economy is a real priority for you, you won't have trouble choosing a model that fits the bill. Ford doesn't offer any hybrids or plug-in hybrids at the moment, but if you want a Focus that's really cheap to run there's always the Focus Electric.

But as far as gas models are concerned, the most fuel efficient versions of the 2018 Ford Focus are those equipped with the award-winning 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine and a six-speed manual transmission. That combination delivers EPA-estimated ratings as good as 30 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway and 34 mpg combined, but even the wild Focus RS is good for 19/25/22 mpg.
